The DBI (Decarbonising the Building Industry) network was proud to support the Australia Awards Short Course: Strengthening Energy and Industrial Greenhouse Gas Emissions Inventory Capacity, designed for key Vietnamese ministries preparing for mandatory GHG reporting — part of a broader visit across Melbourne, Canberra & Perth.
From 2–11 March, delegates from Vietnam’s Ministries of Industry and Trade, Construction, and Science and Technology explored Australia’s carbon market frameworks, GHG inventory methods, and decarbonisation strategies in energy and heavy industry.
The Melbourne program featured:
- Expert-led sessions at University of Melbourne and Melbourne Connect
- Keynotes and insights from University of Melbourne, DBI (Decarbonising the Building Industry), Curtin University, BlueScope, Ecovantage, BSI British Standards, Wood, Midway Limited & Carbon Market Institute (CMI)
- Site visits to Yarra Energy Foundation and Fitzroy North Community Battery, highlighting localised innovation in emissions reduction

The Canberra program was delivered by:
- Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water on Australia’s national inventory, projections, and IPCC-aligned methodologies
- Clean Energy Regulator on the ACCU Scheme and the NGER framework
- Climate Change Authority on emissions reduction policy and safeguard mechanisms
- Peterson Projects and Solutions Australia on ISCC PLUS certification and global regulatory trends
- Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade about Australia’s comprehensive strategic partnership (CSP) with Vietnam on climate, environment, and energy cooperation — Pillar 4 of the CSP

The Perth program focused on:
- A tour of Kwinana Industries Council and BGC Cement showed promise for reducing emissions by up to 95% with repurposing lithium refinery tailings
- Engagements with Western Power on emissions reporting and Eastern Metropolitan Regional Council on carbon credit generation through waste
- Discussions with Chevron and New Zealand’s Ministry for the Environment | Manatū mō te Taiao on MRV practices, Scope 1–3 emissions, and CCS innovation

This was made possible through the leadership of:
- Prof. Tuan Ngo (University of Melbourne / DBI Convenor)
- A/Prof. Lien Duong (Curtin University)
- With support from Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, Aus4Skills, Vietnam Australia Centre, and Australia Awards program
This program strengthens bilateral knowledge exchange and supports Vietnam’s pathway to a robust, transparent carbon market aligned with Article 13 of the Paris Agreement.
