The Decarbonising the Building Industry (DBI) 2024 Conference concluded with an inspiring keynote by Professor Chris Knapp, Research Director at Building 4.0 CRC and a trailblazer in architectural innovation. As a practitioner, researcher, and educator, Professor Knapp brought a multifaceted perspective to the challenges and opportunities in decarbonising the built environment. His address highlighted the critical role of innovation, collaboration, and practical action in reshaping the construction industry for a sustainable future.

Professor Chris Knapp: Leading Change with Building 4.0 CRC

Professor Knapp’s keynote revolved around the transformative work of Building 4.0 CRC, an organisation at the forefront of advancing the construction industry through digitalisation, industrialisation, sustainability, and cultural change. He underscored the urgency of decarbonisation, noting that the built environment accounts for 39% of global carbon emissions and remains a significant consumer of natural resources.

Knapp detailed the CRC’s ambitious mission to address these challenges by leveraging cutting-edge technologies, fostering industry collaboration, and prioritising workforce upskilling. With over 70 completed research projects and an active pipeline of 24 initiatives, Building 4.0 CRC is redefining the construction process from design to decommissioning.

Among the projects Knapp highlighted was Project 95, a collaboration with Homes NSW to develop modular, scalable housing solutions for affordable and social housing. This initiative not only addresses the housing crisis but also sets a precedent for transforming procurement practices to prioritise sustainability and efficiency. He also discussed Project 37, which focuses on optimising timber fibre production to reduce material waste, and the Circular Economy Scoping Study, a comprehensive framework created with 30 industry partners to help construction stakeholders adopt circular practices. Each project exemplifies Building 4.0 CRC’s commitment to delivering practical solutions that align with its decarbonisation goals.

Knapp also highlighted innovations in disaster recovery housing, modular timber systems, and 3D-printed concrete homes, all of which demonstrate the CRC’s commitment to delivering tangible, real-world solutions. Beyond technology, he stressed the importance of changing industry culture to embrace collaboration and holistic thinking, moving away from the adversarial practices that have long hindered progress.

A Vision for Collaborative Transformation

Professor Knapp’s keynote exemplified the spirit of DBI2024: leveraging knowledge, technology, and partnerships to create a sustainable future. His focus on integrating research with practical application resonated deeply with the conference’s mission to bridge academia, industry, and government. By championing innovation and addressing structural inefficiencies in the construction industry, Knapp offered a hopeful roadmap for achieving net-zero emissions.

As DBI2024 attendees left the conference, the call to action from Knapp’s keynote was clear: to make meaningful contributions to decarbonisation by embracing new technologies, rethinking traditional processes, and fostering collaboration. His address served as a fitting conclusion to a conference dedicated to reshaping the building industry for generations to come.
